What Is WCS?

West Coast Swing is a fun, versatile social dance that allows for creativity and personal expression. It can be danced to a wide variety of music, including blues, pop, R&B, contemporary, acoustic, etc., making it an exciting dance for all ages and musical tastes. With a focus on lead-and-follow connection, this dance encourages improvisation, allowing both partners to contribute to the flow and musicality of the movement.

The Basics

Start with the Basics: Your West Coast Swing Journey Begins Here

You’ll hear the term “the basics” a lot in West Coast Swing—and for good reason. The basics are the core moves every dancer starts with, and they’re your key to feeling confident, connected, and ready to dance with anyone. These foundational patterns—like the Sugar Push, Left Side Pass, Right Side Pass, and Whip—form the heart of West Coast Swing. They’re built on a simple rhythm of “walk, walk, triple step, triple step,” which gives the dance its signature smooth, grounded feel. Whether you’ve never danced before or are just getting started, learning the basics is the first step to feeling great on the dance floor.

Here’s what you’ll learn as you begin:

  • Sugar Push – a 6-count pattern that introduces stretch and compression

  • Left Side Pass – helps leaders guide and followers travel smoothly

  • Right Side Pass – builds confidence in directional movement

  • Whip – an 8-count pattern that adds rotation and flow

These patterns aren’t just steps—they’re tools that teach timing, musicality, and how to truly connect with your partner. With a strong foundation, you’ll be ready to dance with anyone, to just about any song.
